Gutters are easy to forget until something goes wrong. In Abitibi, clogged gutters can lead to ice dams, water infiltration in the roof and walls, and damage to your foundation. Cleaning them at the right time prevents costly repairs.
When to clean your gutters
Clean them at least twice a year: once in late spring and once in late fall, after the leaves have dropped but before the first heavy snowfall. If you have large trees close to the house, check them more often.
How to clean them safely
- Use a sturdy ladder on level ground and have someone hold it steady. Never lean over the edge of the ladder.
- Wear work gloves and eye protection.
- Remove leaves and debris by hand or with a plastic scoop, starting near the downspout.
- Flush the gutters with a garden hose to check that water flows freely.
- Clear any blockage in the downspouts and make sure they direct water at least one metre away from the foundation.
Signs your gutters need attention
- Water spilling over the edges during rain.
- Plants or moss growing in the gutters.
- Sagging sections or gutters pulling away from the house.
- Large icicles or ice buildup along the roof edge in winter.
Okapropre tip: Install gutter guards if you have many trees nearby. They will not eliminate cleaning, but they greatly reduce it.
If your home is more than one storey or you are not comfortable working on a ladder, it is safer to hire a professional.
