In an apartment, every square metre counts, and clutter builds up quickly. The secret is a simple routine you can follow every week, so cleaning never becomes an all-day job.
Work top to bottom, room by room
Dust falls down as you clean, so always start high (shelves, light fixtures, the tops of cabinets) and finish with the floors. Finish one room completely before moving to the next so you can see your progress.
Kitchen
- Wipe counters, the stovetop and the backsplash with a mild degreaser.
- Clean the inside of the microwave: heat a bowl of water and lemon for two minutes, then wipe.
- Wipe cabinet handles and the fridge door, which are touched dozens of times a day.
- Empty the garbage and recycling and wipe out the bins.
Bathroom
- Spray the shower and tub first and let the cleaner work while you do the rest.
- Clean the mirror, sink and faucet, then the toilet, from cleanest to dirtiest.
- Replace towels and the bath mat weekly.
Living room and bedroom
- Dust surfaces and electronics with a dry microfibre cloth.
- Vacuum the sofa cushions and under the bed.
- Change bed sheets every one to two weeks.
