The Secret to Cleaning Your Floors Without Damaging Them

Nettoyage de plancher

Floors take more abuse than any other surface in your home, especially in Val-d’Or, where snow, slush and de-icing salt are tracked indoors for half the year. The secret to clean floors is not scrubbing harder. It is using the right method for the right material.

Start dry, then go wet

Always vacuum or sweep before you mop. Grit and sand act like sandpaper under a mop and leave fine scratches, especially on hardwood and laminate. Use a vacuum with a soft brush head and get into corners and along baseboards.

Match the method to the floor

  • Hardwood: use a barely damp microfibre mop and a pH-neutral cleaner. Never soak the wood or use steam.
  • Laminate: treat it like hardwood. Too much water swells the seams.
  • Tile and grout: warm water with a mild eco-friendly cleaner works well. Scrub grout lines with a soft brush and a paste of baking soda and water.
  • Vinyl: a diluted mix of water and white vinegar cuts through film without harsh chemicals.

Fight winter salt

Salt leaves a white, chalky residue that dulls finishes over time. Place absorbent mats at every entrance, ask everyone to remove their boots, and wipe salt stains promptly with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts warm water, followed by a clean rinse.

Okapropre tip: Change your mop water as soon as it looks cloudy. Mopping with dirty water just spreads the grime around.

Keep them clean longer

A quick daily sweep in high-traffic areas, felt pads under furniture legs, and a weekly mop will keep your floors in great shape between deep cleans.
